What We Carry // Jewish Artist Collective: Chicago

The Collective began when 12 local artists were chosen by the Spertus Institute in Chicago to participate in the regional Midwest Artists Lab. The year-long residency included sessions of study with noted scholars, access to the Spertus Museum archives of art, artifacts and library, as well as critiques of our artistic process. The residency culminated in a group exhibition at the Spertus Museum with the theme of Wisdom. Through interaction and discussion, the artists found cohesion in their desire to express the complexity of their individual and inherited histories. This group exhibition centers on personal, spiritual and societal explorations of the Jewish ancestral collective unconscious. Equally, the artists apply their Judaic studies to a modern world with a contemporary idiom. The range of interpretations and approaches by the artists is uniquely engaging.
